Report on a city tour in Ulm: Old Town and Ulm Minster

Last Saturday, November 16th, a group of international students have had  the opportunity to take part in a guided city tour in Ulm. The tour took us through the picturesque old town and the impressive Ulm Minster, where we were not only able to admire the sights of the city, but also learn exciting stories and background information. This tour has been organized by ASSIST.

Start in the old town in the sunshine
The tour began in the historic old town of Ulm. The narrow, cobbled streets and well-preserved half-timbered houses immediately transported us back to a bygone era. Particularly impressive was the Leaning House, a crooked half-timbered building that now houses a hotel and is considered one of the most crooked hotels in the world.
Our tour guide explained the history of the old town, which was badly destroyed in the Second World War but lovingly restored afterwards. We walked along the Blau, a small river that meanders picturesquely through the old town. One highlight was the picturesque fishermen’s quarter, which was once home to craftsmen and fishermen. Today, numerous small cafés and craft stores invite you to linger.

Ulm Minster
After exploring the old town, we made our way to Ulm Minster, the city’s most famous landmark. With its 161.53 meter high tower, it is the tallest church tower in the world – an impressive sight that had already greeted us from afar.

Inside the church, we were impressed by the high ceiling and the filigree stained glass windows that tell biblical stories. Our guide told us that construction of the cathedral began in 1377 and took almost 500 years. It was particularly fascinating to learn that the church was originally financed by citizens, as they did not want to become dependent on the nobility or the church.
