Architecture in Regensburg – from Gothic to Classical
ASSIST excursion on June 28, 2025

The excursion to Regensburg was certainly one for early risers. The students joining the excursion met at Ulm Central Station at 6:15 am for a 3 hours train ride. From Regensburg train station the group took a bus to Donaustauf, where they climbed to the Valhalla temple. Built by Bavarian King Ludwig I in the 19th century, the temple is a huge monument in classicist style. Inside, busts depicting famous personalities are on display. Of the 135 busts, only seven are dedicated to women (!). Mobile phones immediately started clicking around the building and the wonderful view of the Danube and the wide landscape.
After visiting Valhalla, the group returned to downtown Regensburg and enjoyed a guided tour that started at the Old Town Hall. They marveled at the many outstanding Gothic houses in the old town with their characteristic towers. The city guide gave an entertaining tour of the sights of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg in English. After a brief visit to the cathedral, the tour concluded at the renowned stone bridge spanning the Danube River.
